Studio 44 MocapLab, led by Gilles Jobin, focuses on advanced motion capture for performance, film, and immersive mediain Geneva, Switzerland. Their work blends movement, technology, and storytelling to create expressive digital experiences.
In a Research & Development (R&D) session, the team contributed motion capture for Dans le dos du Temps by Irédé Eve Oduntan, an artist known for creating visually rich, poetic animation works.
Projects rooted in visual storytelling and artistic expression require more than basic motion capture. Subtle gestures, timing, and emotional nuance all play acritical role in how movement translates on screen.
Standardbody tracking alone cannot fully capture this level of detail. Hand motion in particular is essential for conveying intent, rhythm, and expression, especially in animation.
Duringthe session, Studio 44 Mocap Lab used a motion capture setup powered by Qualisys for full-body tracking, combined with MANUS gloves for detailed hand capture.
MANUS gloves track hand articulation with millimeter-level precision across 25 degrees of freedom, enabling the capture of individual finger movement in realtime. This allows performers’ hand gestures to be recorded alongside full-bodymotion as a unified dataset.
In this context, motion capture is not only a technical process but also acreative tool.
By capturing detailed hand movement, the team is able to preserve the nuances of performance that contribute to the overall visual language of the film. This is particularly relevant for work like Oduntan’s, where imagery, rhythm, and emotion are closely connected.
By combining full-body motion capture with MANUS gloves, Studio 44 MocapLab demonstrates how detailed hand tracking enhances both technical accuracy andcreative expression.
