Overview

The Motive 3.1 Plugin for MANUS Core 2.2 enables live-streaming finger data of OptiTrack Metagloves and previous generation OptiTrack Gloves into Motive:Body 3.1.

Motive 3.1 Plugin

Overview

The Motive 3.1 plugin offers the ability to use the Quantum Metagloves hand scaling instead of marker placement to determine hand size.

This means the placement of the markers does no longer affects the dimensions of the hand and the accuracy of the finger capture is improved.

For Prime series gloves, we recommend to use the marker based hand scaling.

Downloading

The Motive 3.1 Plugin for MANUS Core 2.2 can be downloaded from the MANUS Resource Center.

Installation

MANUS SDK Plugin

To install the plugin, copy the ManusSDK DLL in the Motive installation directory, which is typically located in "C:\Program Files\OptiTrack\Motive\"

  • Copy the "ManusSDK.dll" into the Motive 3.1 installation folder.

Glove Based Hand Scaling Plugin

New with the Motive 3.1 plugin, is the ability to use the Quantum Metagloves hand skeleton dimensional data.

Previous Motive 3 plugins relied on on the optical markers to determine the hand size.

With the new Motive 3.1 plugin, accurate glove data can be used, meaning marker placement does not affect the hand dimensions or the accuracy of the finger capture.

Plugins are installed in Motive's devices folder, which is typically located in "C:\Program Files\OptiTrack\Motive\devices\".

  • Copy the "Manus_2.2_For_Motive_3.1_ScaledFinger_beta_v1.dll" into the devices folder.

Using large amounts of gloves requires a faster computer with the new glove based hand scaling plugin. Make sure to use a fast computer, or use the marker based plugin if you notice significant performance issues.

Marker Based Hand Scaling Plugin

As with previous versions of the Motive 3 plugin, you can continue to use the marker based system which determines hand size.

This means the placement of the markers affects the dimensions of the hand and the accuracy of the finger capture.

We recommend to use this version of the plugin when using Prime series gloves.

Plugins are installed in Motive's devices folder, which is typically located in "C:\Program Files\OptiTrack\Motive\devices\".

  • Copy the "Manus_2.2_For_Motive_3.1_v1.dll" into the devices folder.

Do not use both Motive 3.1 plugins at the same time, only one version of the plugin can be installed in the devices folder.

Usage

Before launching Motive 3.1, make sure to:

  • Launch MANUS Core 2.2.
  • Have your MANUS dongle connected.

When launching Motive 3:

  • Motive 3 will load the plugin on start-up.
  • The plugin will try to connect to MANUS Core 2.2.
  • If MANUS Core 2.2 is not running, Motive 3.1 will stop trying to connect after a number of attempts.
  • If Motive 3.1 has stopped attempting to connect, run MANUS Core 2.2 and restart Motive 3.

You can use the Log panel to verify the plugin has loaded and MANUS Core 2.2 has connected.

It’s recommended to close the MANUS Core Dashboard while running Motive 3.1. MANUS Core will continue to run in the background even when the MANUS Core Dashboard is closed.

Local & Remote Glove Data

Glove Server

The plugin can receive MANUS Core 2.2 data from either a local or remote computer.

Enter the IP of the computer running MANUS Core 2.2 in the Glove Server Address to connect.

The Glove Server Address can be configured in the General Settings.

Make sure your firewall does not block Motive 3 or MANUS Core 2.2 from sending or receiving data.

Skeleton Marker Sets

The OptiTrack Metagloves can be used with any skeleton marker set, including Core (50), Baseline (41), Conventional (39) and Biomech (57).

Attach markers on the wrist, index knuckle and/or pinky knuckle depending on the marker set.

Velcro Markers

The OptiTrack Metagloves can be used with X-base markers.

  • Use Velcro adhesive tape to attach X-base/finger markers for the index knuckle and/or pinky knuckle to the glove fabric.
  • Use X-base markers for the wrist.

OptiTrack Hand Rigid Bodies

The OptiTrack Metagloves can be used with OptiTrack Hand Rigid Bodies.

  • Use Velcro adhesive tape or double sided tape to attach OptiTrack Hand Rigid Bodies to the top of the OptiTrack Metagloves electronics casing.
  • Use the Vertical Hand Adjustment and/or the Gizmo tool to compensate for the height offset.

MANUS Rigid Marker Set

The MANUS Rigid Marker Set can be used with the OptiTrack Metagloves.

Full Body Tracking
  • Use the MANUS Rigid Marker Set with markers for the index knuckle and/or pinky knuckle.
  • Use X-base markers for the wrist.
  • Use the Gizmo tool to compensate for the knuckle marker(s) height offset.

Hands Only Tracking
  • Use the MANUS Rigid Marker Set with M3 marker posts to create unique tracking shapes.
  • Use Motive’s Gizmo tool to compensate for the marker offset.

Configuring Full Body Tracking

Skeleton Marker Sets

Select all your markers, and right click to create a skeleton:

Then pair your gloves to the skeleton you have created, by using the right click menu for each glove:

Predefined MANUS Rigid Body Assets

Included with the Motive 3.1 plugin are Motive files containing predefined rigid body assets for using the MANUS Rigid Body in Motive.

There are two different types; one for the standard MANUS Rigid Body (ManusRB-Hands.motive) and another for the MANUS Extended Rigid Body (ManusExtendedRB-Hands.motive) configuration.

  • MANUS Rigid Body uses markers directly on the MANUS Rigid Marker Set.
  • MANUS Extended Rigid Body uses a spacer on the wrist out marker.

To use the predefined rigid body assets:

  • In Motive, go to file -> open
  • Open one of the included files that matches the rigid body configuration being used.
  • Left and right rigid body will show up in the Assets pane, and it will be used to track the hand-only rigid body in Motive.

Alignment

You can use the camera reference mode to make sure the digital hands are properly aligned:

You can use the Gizmo tool to offset the hand position and rotation, to further tweak the digital hand alignment.

Exporting Asset Definitions

For hands only tracking, the rigid body alignment for the created hand skeleton can be exported in case the same asset definition needs to be used again:

For full-body skeletons, however, this alignment process will need to be repeated as the exported asset will no longer be reliable after the person takes off the suit or removes the markers.
